THE OBJECT
CORDA NERA began as a discarded silhouette. It was cut open, stripped of its identity and rebuilt around a spine of hand-knotted marine rope. What remains of the original object is structural memory only.
THE MATERIALS
- Hand-distressed Italian calfskin
- Waxed marine rope
- Cast antique brass hardware
- Blackened silver eyelets
- Hand-mixed patina
THE PROCESS
The upper is sanded to expose the grain, layered with hand-mixed pigment, then burned back with solvent until the surface reads as archaeology rather than product. Rope is knotted wet and dried under tension so the tension never releases. Hardware is cast in a Milanese foundry from Giovanni's own wax models.
