THE OBJECT
PIOMBO is the archive turned to lead. A high silhouette weathered to the colour of cast metal, then armoured edge to edge — pyramid studs across the quarter, conical spikes at the collar and heel — until the object reads as a weapon that happens to be a shoe.
THE MATERIALS
- Weathered lead-grey Italian leather
- Several hundred silver pyramid studs
- Conical collar and heel spikes
- Cracked-ice gesso swoosh panel
- Pyramid stud and gem lace locks
- Grey waxed flat lacing
THE PROCESS
The upper is stripped and weathered with a lead-grey wash, sanded back along the seams and left unsealed. Studs and spikes are driven from the inside out, one at a time, in fields mapped by hand. The swoosh is cast in gesso, cracked and set into the panel like porcelain. Lace locks in pyramid stud and cut gem finish the throat.
